Another writer, who dismisses balance as something only acrobats can do, nonetheless tells the story of how Melanie Healey, a marketing manager for Procter & Gamble, renegotiated a better deal. Recently returned from maternity leave, Healey was offered a special assignment from her boss. A classic Don Draper type, he was famous for starting meetings before 7:00 a.m. and leaving late. That wouldnât work for Healey and her new baby.
She agreed to take the assignment as long as he agreed to her new hours. âI am going to get here at eight in the morning. So you canât start a meeting before eight,â she told him. âI am going to be home at six oâclock. So you canât start a meeting after five that doesnât end by five to six so I can be home by six.â The boss was surprised by her demands but didnât want to lose her help. He agreed.21
Striking a new balance is possible. The trouble is, we fail to achieve it because we donât always believe so and thus never even try.
